Grand Canyon Rock Climbing

October 17, 2011

11 October: We woke up the next morning and had some oatmeal for breakfast. The plan for today was to walk around the rim, scout out O’Neill Butte and Battleship for an attempt tomorrow, and toprope a few routes off the rim trail.

We walked from Mather Campground with our ropes and all of our climbing gear out to Grandeur Point. From here we could look to the West and see Grand Canyon Village, below to the Bright Angel Trail, and across to the Battleship.

We decided from here that the Battleship would be a giant pain to climb, and really sketchy. We walked over to Yavapai Point and included the same thing about O’Neill. They are both supposedly Class IV with a lot of exposure, but we decided to give it a miss until later. We took a bus over to El Tovar and walked along the rim, past Bright Angel Lodge, to the rim trail. After the first switchback on the rim trail, across from a bench, there are two sets of bolts that can be toproped from. Thomas rappelled from the bolts and I belayed him on a 5.10 and a 5.10-. Unfortunately I forgot my climbing shoes and so I just belayed.
